west Wales
Artist's Catalogue No: 1061
Watercolour & gouache
on paper
Image size 24.1 x 34.2 cms
£3,175

Note from the Artist: Carew Castle is a splendid medieval fortress, begun in the late 12th century, but mostly constructed between
1270 and 1320, the high point of castle building in Wales. Between 1558 and 1592, during the reign of Elizabeth I, the north side
of the castle was "modernised" in the latest Elizabethan style, with large windows and a long gallery on the top floor. It is that
part that is shown on the left here.

Maritime structures at Hurst
Castle, Hampshire
Artist's Catalogue No: 1046
Watercolour & gouache
on paper
Image size 64.6 x 50.6 cms
£8,950
|
|
Note from the Artist: Hurst Castle is located on a spit jutting out into the Solent. The oldest part was built in 1541-1544
during the reign of Henry VIII as one of a chain of coastal fortifications. During the 19th century it was considerably
extended with two very large wings for gun emplacements, and the back wall of one wing is shown here.
The more recent structures beyond are to do with controlling maritime traffic, rather than defence.

Watercolour & gouache
on paper
Image size 46.0 x 52.2 cms
£4,900

Note from the Artist: The rusty roof presented a good excuse to paint a splash of red. I probably exaggerated the rustiness.
